DESCRIPTION
Ambergris has fascinated alchemists for generations. Its origin, once shrouded in mystery, evokes wonder. Old texts recount a variety of mystical theories—some believed it was a plant growing on the seabed, consumed by marine animals. Others speculated it was dew falling from sea islands, carried by the waves, or even a product of a hidden spring in the ocean. These imaginative theories were born from humanity’s deep fascination with a product so rare and extraordinary that it seemed to demand an otherworldly explanation.
For centuries, the true source of ambergris remained unknown. Today, we understand that it is a by-product of the majestic sperm whale. Yet, even with this knowledge, ambergris continues to captivate with its allure, rarity, and profound properties. Ancient medical texts describe its benefits in awe-inspiring terms: 'strengthens the heart,' 'beneficial for paralysis,' and 'considered the finest of perfumes.'
When composing Elysium, I wanted the fragrance to embody all of the above! I envisioned it as more than just a scent—it had to be an experience. I wanted it to truly capture the moment you’re in, to unveil something deeper, something extraordinary. It should overcome your mind and olfactory system, immersing you in an allure that is both physical and spiritual. With Elysium, I sought to create a fragrance steeped in spiritual mysticism, one that evokes a sense of wonder and reverence. This isn’t just another fragrance you put your nose to; it’s something you return to again and again, each encounter revealing something new.
Imagine purple blackcurrant incense, laced with wild Filipino oud, drenched in precious florals, and swimming in an ocean of ambergris. That, in essence, is Elysium.
The oud in this composition is none other than SULAYM Nᵒ 2, our flagship oud from our Autumn/Winter collection. While it’s common to see cheaper ouds used in attars—as the expensive facets are often subdued by florals—this blend demanded nothing but the best. Aged for 15 years, Nᵒ 2 was chosen because of its naturally oceanic and terpene incense notes, perfectly complementing the composition and elevating the entire fragrance.
And then, the florals: the incomparable HM Royal Ta’ifi rose, which I’ve spoken about often, paired with some of the world’s finest precious florals. Together, they weave an opulent composition that transforms this attar into a captivating fragrance.
So, what does Elysium smell like? Much like the name it bears, it’s difficult to encapsulate in words. It’s an experience, one that seems to evolve with every wearer. I’ve heard countless interpretations from customers who’ve encountered it, each describing it in their own unique way.
Take a swipe—don’t rub it in—and let the journey begin. The opening is an intense purple incense, bold and mystical, followed by a rush of vibrant fruits: think Jamaican mangoes and pear drops. These fruit-like notes stem from the exceptional oud used in this blend, distilled in 2009, with a character so unique it lends Elysium its unforgettable opening.
As the fragrance settles, the finest ylang ylang emerges, not in its usual floral sweetness but with an oceanic twist that’s both refreshing and captivating. Ta’ifi rose adds a crystalline effect, an elegant contrast that sparkles at the heart of the composition.
And then comes the dry down—a warm, sensual embrace of amber and bakhoor-like incense. It’s rich, luxurious, and deeply grounding, with a longevity that lingers for hours, leaving an indelible mark on both the wearer and those fortunate enough to be near them.
