DESCRIPTION
Beneath a humble tuft of grass lies one of perfumery's great treasures. Vetiver's roots plunge as deep as three to four metres into the earth, and it is there, not in the leaves, that its scent is held. In India it is known as khus, and for centuries it has been part of daily life: in the summer heat of Mughal India, mats woven from its roots were hung in doorways and sprinkled with water, so that every breeze carried cool, fragrant air into the home.
At SULAYM, we have chosen a vetiver absolute from India, the plant's ancestral home. Unlike a traditional distilled oil, an absolute is gently extracted to capture the root's fullest, richest character. Deep brown, thick and slow-pouring, it has been aged for two years before taking its place in the Oud Botanica range, where it is infused with our finest oud using our secret in-house method.
On its own, this vetiver is already a beautiful fragrance. It opens like rain falling on dry soil, then smoulders into a smoky, fiery heart with nutmeg and petrichor facets. Our oud deepens every layer, drawing out vetiver's dark, rooty character and wrapping it in resinous warmth, while a touch of aged sandalwood and musk rounds off the composition. The result is nothing short of phenomenal: grounding, commanding and powerful, to be worn alone or layered along side your SULAYM fragrances.
