I have a fond memory I want to share with you. It was during the time I was learning how to make perfumes. My Shaykh was guiding me through the world of animalics and decided to run an experiment with civet.
He let me smell it in a tincture form which is how it's usually used in modern practice (if at all). It was intense. Deeply animalic. Primal. The kind of scent that doesn’t just sit on the skin; it hits the nervous system. It stirred something immediate and instinctive.
Then, without saying much, he walked over to a stovetop espresso maker, loaded it with fresh grounds, and added a single drop of civet to the coffee just before the water began to rise.
What happened next has stayed with me ever since. The room filled with this beautiful fragrance - the smell of perfume, but through the lens of heat, coffee, and metal. When I took that first sip, it was like drinking vintage Chanel No. 5. Not in a gimmicky way - it was surreal. Like the soul of a fragrance had passed through the cup.
It’s a memory that’s stayed imprinted in my mind for years. One I thought I’d never be able to relive. Until now.
Welcome to the Sultan’s very own civet paste. Decades of ageing have done something remarkable to it's fragrance. All the rough edges, the sharp animalic or even fecal barnyard notes, have disappeared completely. What remains is the drydown in its purest form: warm, ambery, creamy. Like worn leather that’s absorbed years of skin and soul. The paste is, quite honestly, mind-blowing.
I’ve seen Russian Adam on his socials layering himself in civet paste for the Friday Prayer and now I understand why. On its own, it's a perfume. Layer it with any fragrance of your choice and it elevates it like it’s on steroids. It transforms whatever it touches.
