Few flowers carry as much history as the rose, and few pairings feel as natural as rose and oud. In the Islamic world the two have long walked side by side: each year, the Ka'aba is washed with Zamzam water mixed with rosewater, and its walls are perfumed with oud. Among all roses, Rose de Mai, Rosa centifolia or the "hundred-petalled rose," is one of the most treasured. Its fame belongs to Grasse in Provence, where it blooms for just a few weeks each May and is gathered by hand in the early morning, when its scent is at its richest. So prized is this craft that the perfume skills of the Pays de Grasse are recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage.
At SULAYM, we have been waiting for the right moment to release this Rose de Mai. The day we first opened it, its scent was so bright, jammy and commanding that it seemed to travel across the entire workshop the moment the lid came off. We have infused it with oud that has been ageing since 2021, using a technique and ratio that remain a closely guarded house secret.
The rose remains the star: radiant, jammy and full of life. But the oud takes it somewhere entirely new, giving it depth, shadow and dimension, as if the rose has stepped off the page and into four dimensions.
