Wild oud is becoming increasingly rare as time moves forward. We are witnessing a cycle, one that likely will not outlast our current generation. Beyond this point, it may exist only in the hands of collectors, preserved rather than experienced.
For many months, the Imperial collection has remained absent. Not by choice, but by necessity. The quality of recent distillations has declined, lacking the depth, character, and integrity we demand.
To present something worthy, we turned inward, deep into the atelier, uncovering a piece that had been set aside. Patiently aged and allowed to evolve undisturbed, it now emerges in its full expression for this year’s spring–summer collection.
KAYU is an exotic oud that fulfils every expectation of a true wild profile. It is not linear, it moves like a melody, unfolding in layers, each note revealing itself. Deep and commanding, it grips the olfactory system as soon as you raise it to your nose.
The opening is immediate and distinctive, ripened fruits intertwined with a cola effervescence. As it settles, darker tones emerge, diesel facets and smouldering incense, characteristic of the Gyrinops species from which it is distilled.
There is an intensity to its spicey, woody smoke, yet it never becomes harsh. Instead, it transforms into a delicate balance, sweet and intensely floral. It evokes the moment a box of Medjool dates is first opened, dense, syrupy, and deeply comforting.
Aged nuances begin to surface as it evolves. The profile reminds you of musk that has been macerated over years, where the raw, animalic edges have faded, giving way to something refined, rounded, and perfume like. This oud carries that same transformation within it.
In the background, a gentle aquatic mentholated note lingers, never overpowering, moving gracefully through the composition.
